A Brief History of The Helicopter Factory

Washington, D.C. is home to some of the nation’s most historic buildings, structures, and sites.

The Helicopter Factory, located at 774 Girard Street NW in Washington, D.C.’s Columbia Heights neighborhood, is no exception.

From 1902 to the mid-1920s, this industrial site was home to the Standard Materials Co. and the Gyro Moto Co., where inventor Emile Berliner and his son-in-law, Joseph Sanders, developed and manufactured products such as the flat disc gramophone and the gyro engine, an early component of the modern helicopter.

Today, real estate developers Brick Lane and Brook Rose — in partnership with TTR Sotheby’s International Realty — have restored this iconic property to inspire a new generation of Washingtonians.
