The Year In Review: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

It’s safe to say that 2020 will be remembered as one of the most challenging years in modern history.

Yet, for so many, the fear and uncertainty ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic served as a dark backdrop to the horrific events surrounding the death of George Floyd.

As the anger and frustration from the events that occurred in Minneapolis echoed across the country, difficult conversations about race, civil rights, and the very idea of what it means to be American came to light.

Since the inception of our firm in 1988, TTR Sotheby's International Realty has taken a leadership role in the communities in which we live and serve.

Yet, this past summer in Washington, D.C. — at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement — the ideals of community leadership have never felt more important.

Indeed, at a moment where millions gathered nationwide to celebrate the life of George Floyd and to bring to the national spotlight a sincere conversation about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness in America, it was clear to us here at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty that the time to double down on our commitment to community had arrived.

To do our part, TTR Sotheby's International Realty made the swift decision to enact June 19th a permanent paid holiday.

In acknowledging Juneteenth in this manner, our goal was to empower over 500 real estate associates across the Washington area with the time, energy, and resources to celebrate the African-American community and to establish ourselves firmly as advocates of inclusion and equality.

In addition, TTR Sotheby's International Realty renewed its commitment to hire talented professionals who are representative of the communities in which we live and serve. This means being intentional about making sure our staff and associates reflect the rich diversity which makes the Washington area so exceptional.

As we approach the end of the year, we are pleased to share that our family has grown to include several individuals of a wide range of backgrounds — individuals who not only represent the finest of the real estate community but also share our vision for meaningful change.

To further solidify our policies towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we also doubled down on workforce training and corporate community building efforts.

These efforts manifested over the course of the year in two ways.

To begin, we facilitated a more practical training program on the ideals of Fair Housing, the moral pillars of our industry and a critical topic where we can contribute to the larger conversation around racial inequity in the United States.

Next, TTR Sotheby's International Realty commenced a series of regular Town Halls with our associates to discuss topics related to race and social consciousness.

In creating an environment for open and honest conversation about these important topics, TTR Sotheby's International Realty strives to empower our associates with a safe space to explore ideas and collaborate with their colleagues in a productive and impactful manner.

Finally, as we reflect on what many will consider the most challenging year in recent memory, we see many opportunities to ensure the failures and inequities of our past can be used as fuel, motivation, and inspiration for years ahead.

Community Spotlight: Celebrate Logan Reimagined

As one of the Washington Metropolitan Area's foremost leaders in corporate philanthropy, TTR Sotheby's International Realty is committed to strengthening the communities in which we live and serve.

That's why TTR Sotheby's International Realty is proud to partner with our friends at N Street Village to present Celebrate Logan Reimagined, a virtual tour of Washington, D.C.'s iconic Logan Circle neighborhood.

Celebrate Logan was created eight years ago to benefit the women of N Street Village, the largest homeless facility in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

For years, restaurants in the Logan Circle neighborhood have graciously donated their space, their time, and their energy to make this event a reality. However, given the unique and extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in, we have pivoted the traditional model to lend direct support to our restaurant partners.

Now, more than ever, we need to come together as a community to help those less fortunate than us.

To support this exciting new initiative, we encourage you to purchase a ticket. Starting at $100.00, tickets include a wine tasting of three wines, accompanied by a charcuterie board from Cork Food & Wine. Diane Gross, owner of Cork, will lead participants in a virtual guided tasting on September 17.

For any more questions about this event, sponsorship levels, and participating restaurants, please visit Celebrate Logan Reimagined.

Community Spotlight: Making A Difference at Children's National Hospital

Children’s National Hospital urgently needs our help. The medical staff has been working around the clock to care for thousands of very sick children during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has put a strain on these frontline heroes and the hospital’s critically-important blood supply. Currently, Children’s Blood Donor Center is meeting less than 60% of the hospital’s transfusion needs.

To help address this dire shortage, I founded the “Burr Group - Children’s Club” blood drive to rally my colleagues at TTR Sotheby’s International Realty, agents at other DC-area real estate firms, and the entire community to donate blood. The response has been amazing. At the first two blood drives we held, more than 100 people rolled up their sleeves to give. Those donations helped nearly 150 seriously-ill children.

On Saturday, September 12th, I am sponsoring another blood drive at Children’s from 9am to 3pm. If you’d like to give, you can sign up here. It only takes 30-45 minutes to donate, and it can provide a life-saving gift. It is impossible to stand in the lobby of the hospital, and not be moved by the brave young patients who would greatly benefit from our donations.

Community Spotlight: Teach for America

Teach For America supports a vibrant community of over 3,000 alumni in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

As one of the Washington Metropolitan Area's foremost leaders in corporate philanthropy, TTR Sotheby's International Realty is committed to strengthening the communities in which we live and serve.

This month, we turn the spotlight on our friends at Teach for America, an incredible organization whose mission of delivering access to education for all children helps build strong communities in the Washington Metropolitan Area and beyond.

To learn more about Teach For America, we sat down with Christie-Anne Weiss, Senior Vice President at TTR Sotheby's International Realty and Board Chair of Teach for America to learn more about the organization and its goals for 2019.

Christie, tell us about your role at Teach for America

The way I approach my role is very simple. We meet with community members nearly every day to expand visibility for Teach For America to help spread the word about the impact the organization has in the community.

Identifying, contacting, and stewarding foundations, individuals and corporations whose giving goals align with the organization's mission is my passion.

I have discovered when people meet Teach for America's teachers they are inspired not only by their dedication, grit, and resourcefulness, but also their personal stories — how they came to be in the classroom.

Some were taught by Teach for America teachers themselves while others view themselves as change makers and realize that education is the one gift that a child retains throughout her life and that allows her to access to life opportunities that are otherwise unattainable.

Tell us about TTR Sotheby’s International Realty's partnership with Teach for America.

In 2010, I engaged with TTR Sotheby's International Realty as a Board Member to help promote Teach for America's Annual Gala.

Since then, TTR Sotheby's International Realty has been generous in offering consistent access to professional advice, including financial and marketing support, as well as exposure on proprietary platforms such as The Insider newsletter.

As you look towards the future, what is Teach for America's biggest challenge and what steps are you taking to overcome this challenge?

Like so many organizations in the Washington Metropolitan Area — where there is a plethora of not-for-profit organizations in a relatively small population center — access to capital is the biggest opportunity for the organization’s health and growth.

This is another reason why TTR Sotheby's International Realty is an ideal partner. With a global network, TTR Sotheby's International Realty welcomes new community members every day and helps acclimate them to the needs and aspirations of education in the community.

What is Teach for America's biggest goal for this year?

In 2019, Teach for America will expand into Virginia for the first time!

This huge initiative has been 10 years in the making. The organization’s first class of corps members (the name given to the newest cohort of teachers who commit to teach in one region for two years) will launch in Alexandria in September 2019. The goal is to ensure that they exceed performance expectations as classroom professionals and new community members.

Concurrently, Teach For America is planning for more growth in Northern Virginia by launching a Case for Support to underscore the need for great teachers across Virginia as well as in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

It should be noted that Teach for America is the only organization with the experience and scale in this region to add capacity while maintaining the highest level of quality in classrooms and schools. At present, the organization teaches 47,000 students here every day, and the goal is to grow to ensure that one day all children will have access to an excellent education.

What steps are you taking to achieve your organization’s biggest goal for the year?

Just like steps to overcome challenges, achieving a goal requires focused and relentless pursuit of opportunity.

As one example, the management team at Teach for America has built relationships over the years in the Alexandria community — with 3,000 alumni living and working in this area, Teach for America has a deep bench of support from individuals who know the work intimately and believe in the power of great teachers.

The passionate board at Teach for America works with corps members, constituents, and Alexandria system leaders and community members to ensure that everyone is fully invested in and engaged in the success of this launch.

My role features identifying, introducing and stewarding remarkable individuals like Mark who can help create a path for responsible growth.

As a member of the local community, how can everyday folks help support Teach for America?

There are so many roles community members can play.

For those interested in supporting Teach for America, we usually begin with a school visit to a teacher’s classroom to see first hand how these remarkable professionals engage their students.

Whether pre-K or AP Biology, each teacher has earned a spot through rigorous metrics. Last year, over 50,000 applicants strove to be a part of the corps group of teachers, with only 3,500 selected nationwide.

The Washington Metropolitan Area stands out nationally — year after year — as a flagship posting among applicants.

This talent draw has led to over 70% of our corps members staying beyond their two-year commitment.

The vibrancy of a great corps leads to a committed community of educators, which is how real progress is made.

How can people learn more about Teach for America?

The Teach for America website is a great resource that further elaborates on the organization ’s history and goals www.teachforamerica.org.

In addition, I would be delighted to engage with anyone who would like more information.

This year, we celebrate new beginnings as the Washington Kastles move to a new stadium at Washington, D.C.'s Union Market.
